Traders under their umbrella United Arcaders traders Entrepreneurs association have asked parliament to prevail over Landlords and stop them from demanding rent arrears.

This is as they were appearing before the Trade Committee of parliament chaired by Mbarara City South mp Mwine Mpaka led by their chairperson Edward Ntale.

They also want the parliament to prevail over ministries of Finance, Trade, and commissioner-general of Uganda Revenue Authority to withdraw the new tax policy, saying it has increased the cost of importation of textile products.

Ntale says due to these taxes a container of textiles is calculated in Kilograms which has increased from 120 Million shillings per container to 540 Million shillings which are oppressing traders.

In the meantime, Landlords under their umbrella Kampala New Generation Traders Association have not appeared before this committee as it had been scheduled due to the meeting with the ministries of Finance, Trade over the complaints of tenants and how to resolve their differences harmoniously.

Mwine Mpaka says Landlords have been given an ultimatum of up to Friday this week to appear, adding that in case if they fail to appear, the same committee will use its powers based on the constitution to summon them to appear. As he explains.
