Parliament’s accountability committees want parliament to overturn its decision to adopt the auditor general’s reports with their recommendations without these committees first scrutinizing them.
In May this year, parliament adopted a motion where they resolved to adopt all the auditor general’s reports with their recommendations with the aim of clearing the backlog that had been accumulated by the committees.
The chairperson of the public accounts committee, Medard Segoona, says that the decision to adopt the auditor general’s reports means that accountability committees will not have to scrutinize these reports anymore and they have to wait for the new auditor general’s report that will come out in December. Now they want to bring a new motion to rescind the earlier decision.
The chairperson committee on state authorities and state enterprises, Joel Senyonyi says that even though the decision was taken to cure the problem of backlog, this has left them without work until next year yet they have a duty to scrutinize these reports.
The chairperson of the public accounts committee, local government, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, says that the decision taken compromises the set standards.
