The worker’s member of parliament Arinaitwe Rwakajara has assured tea sector actors of how the government has set strategies to revitalise it by setting a regulatory authority.
Hon. Rwakajara said this while addressing the gathering of Trade Union members at Boma grounds in Fort Portal as they were celebrating a pre-labor day national celebration that will take place tomorrow at Mukabura playgrounds.
Rwakajara expressed that unlike coffee and dairy among others that are authorized, the tea sub-sector continues to be unregulated.
” The authority will enforce the regulation of tea owners and factories’ activities to ensure they produce good quality tea that can fetch reasonable prices and foresee any challenge affecting the sector” states Rwakajara
He added that the government is set to acquire a loan from the World Bank to revamp already closed factories and improve standards of the tea sector.
” Tea industry has a higher potential to contribute more to the national economy, employment and environment conservation and therefore need immediate attention by government” Rwakajara emphasizes.
He explains that fellow members of parliament support his private member bill he presented on the floor of parliament about the minimum wage by passing it as it awaits the president’s signature to be implemented soon.
The team later planted trees at the Tooro golf course to contribute to Fort Portal City’s development plan of turning the tourism hub into a city forest by 2030.
