Members of the African Evangelistic Enterprise have today converged at Makerere University to celebrate the Golden Jubilee in Evangelism. The event has been graced by First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni Who called upon Evangelists to partner with the government to bring the gospel close to learners in schools.
The service to celebrate 50 years of evangelism was led by the Emeritus Archbishop of the church of Uganda Henry Luke Orombi. Orombi commended the late Bishop Festo Kivenjere for playing a huge role in spreading the gospel of Christian revival. Orombi called for the establishment of a monument in Kampala to remember the great works of Bishop Kivengere.
Orombi called upon the faithful to walk in the footsteps of Kivengere who started the African Evangelistic Enterprise and use everything at their disposal to promote evangelism. He urged the public to support the refugees and also the needy people who are getting rough to make a living amidst skyrocketing prices of commodities.
Rev. Can. John Ssenyonyi, one of the leaders of the African Evangelistic Enterprise, disclosed plans to set up a school to train Evangelists to restore the sanctity of evangelism.
The former Prime Minister of Uganda Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the minister of state for industry David Bahati who all benefited from the support of Kivengere in their academic journeys, shared their testimonies to the congregation.
The first Lady Janet Kataha Museveni officiated as guest of honor and hailed Bishop Festo Kivengere as a hero who risked his life to Support Museveni’s family while in exile in Kenya during the guerilla warfare that brought the NRM government in power.
Museveni expressed concerns over the absence of chapels and scripture Unions in schools which used to develop learners in the spiritual aspect when they are still young. She noted that phasing out of these evangelism facilities in schools has contributed to increasing cases of hooliganism in the higher institutions of learning giving an example of Makerere University where a student was recently stabbed to death in guild campaigns.
